More and more businesses are creating plans to become carbon neutral or even carbon negative by a certain year. And while radical emissions reductions should be the primary way to achieve carbon neutrality for any organization (or even nation), these reductions can take time to implement. Compensation can be a useful tool while we still work to get to net zero emissions, or to take responsibility for the emissions we just can’t reduce. It can also be a tool to take climate action immediately, to actually begin removing CO2 from the atmosphere, rather than just putting a bit less in.

However, done wrong, compensation can be a waste of money or at worst, cause more harm than good. So how do you ensure that your compensation investment actually enhances your overall sustainability strategy? How do you avoid greenwashing? And in the sea of information, how do you figure out what the really important things are that you should be looking out for?

Tools to get you started

We’ve compiled a list of the 10 critical questions you should ask yourself before compensating. After going through this list, you will have a clearer picture of how to make compensation a clear part of your sustainability goals, what to look out for when choosing projects, and what to think about when communicating about compensation.
